The Core Message

Sonic Civil Alert is a community-based online radio and digital media project rooted in Inverclyde and connected to wider movements locally, nationally and internationally. It brings together music, storytelling and documentation to capture how communities are already building practical alternatives—on their own terms, with the resources they have.

This project documents everyday efforts: neighbours growing food together, volunteers building resilience, young people reimagining futures, and communities creating systems that work better for everyone. At its core is a non-profit, community-driven platform designed to amplify these realities and make them more visible, connected and repeatable.

Sonic Civil Alert operates strictly on a non-profit basis. It is not established to generate profit for members or directors; any surplus is reinvested into strengthening broadcasts, supporting community projects, and maintaining the tools and infrastructure needed to keep the signal going. - SC895017

Reasonable pay, expenses, fair services and proper insurance are part of sustainability—but there are no dividends or profit shares. If the company winds up, all remaining assets are transferred to organisations with similar aims.

What We Do

We run a community-based radio and digital media platform serving Inverclyde and connected communities by:

  • Producing live and recorded broadcasts, alongside digital media that supports creative regenerative efforts, community development, food and housing awareness, and mental-health-supportive culture.

  • Creating space for local voices—young people, grassroots groups and self-organised communities—to share stories, skills, knowledge and music.

  • Organising and supporting workshops, events, training sessions and pop-up broadcasts that build media exposure and literacy, participation and confidence.

  • Collaborating with community gardens, food networks, arts and regeneration projects, and anti-poverty initiatives to document and amplify their work.

  • Developing and maintaining accessible, decentralised and portable broadcasting infrastructure, including off-grid systems and independent streaming tools.

Alongside radio, we publish mid/long-form articles, interviews, photo documentation, videos and practical guides—shared across decentralised platforms wherever possible.

Why It Matters

The world is changing quickly, but resilient communities are not waiting for permission. They are already creating solutions—imperfect, evolving, but real.

From Inverclyde’s food networks reducing waste and emissions while working to ensure no one goes hungry, to youth-led education models and time banks redefining value—these efforts show what is possible through cooperation

We document this work because it deserves recognition, because isolated groups need to know they are not alone, and because sharing what works helps others begin.

By design, Sonic Civil Alert exists to benefit communities in Inverclyde while strengthening their connections to wider movements with shared aims.

Our Approach

We look, listen, document and amplify.

We focus on practical realities—small victories, honest struggles and usable knowledge. We believe communities understand their own needs better than external institutions, so we prioritise their voices, solutions and creativity.

Everything we produce aims to be useful: inspiration when energy is low, evidence that collective action works, and resources for those ready to act.

We also use AI as a practical and ethical tool in this work, grounded in transparency, accountability and a commitment to constructive, good-faith engagement.

The Platform

This Substack-based space is the written wing of Sonic Civil Alert.
It complements the broadcasts by offering:

  • Show notes, playlists, event invitations and behind-the-scenes updates

  • Long-form essays, interviews and translations

  • Reflections on building non-commercial, community-driven media

  • Calls for contributors, collaborations and pop-up broadcasts

At this stage, all content is free. Any future paid options will be clearly tied to specific community goals; we will not introduce paywalled access for commercial purposes.

Who It’s For

This space is for anyone interested in independent music, community projects, and practical ways of living and working together more sustainably.

You do not need to be an expert—just curious, respectful and open to listening.

While rooted in Inverclyde and the west of Scotland, the project is part of a wider international conversation about cooperation, resilience and collective care.

Who We Are

The project grows from lived experience in community organising, radio broadcasting and grassroots work. It brings together skills in audio production, digital storytelling and facilitation, with a focus on supporting community voices rather than speaking over them.

We value cooperation over competition, shared ownership over extraction, and informed, critical thinking over passive media & news consumption.

Get Involved

If you are working or planning to work on community projects, food networks, cooperatives, workshops, or local initiatives—or if you have lessons, failures or ideas worth sharing—we want to hear from you.

This is not a one-way broadcast. It is a growing, shared archive—built with communities, for communities—documenting how change already happens.

Subscribe to stay connected, contribute your experience, or collaborate with others doing similar work.

Because better futures are not abstract—they are being built right now, wherever people choose solidarity, cooperation and collective care.
