Over the coming weeks, selected original articles will begin to include accompanying audio versions. These recordings are not replacements for the written pieces. They are an additional way to engage with the same ideas, stories, research, and community-focused work — whether you are listening while travelling, walking, resting, working, or simply taking a break from screens.

The new audio elements will make it easier for readers to become listeners, and for listeners to return to the articles, sources, projects, and conversations behind each broadcast.

New Jingles On Air

We have also begun introducing new Sonic Civil Alert jingles into the radio stream.

These short audio pieces will play approximately every 20 minutes, alongside the technical test jingles already in rotation. They help give the station a clearer identity while signposting the topics, writing, projects, and wider purpose behind Sonic Civil Alert.

You may hear references to community media, mutual aid, circular economy, housing, food, education, rights, wellbeing, ethical A.I., Universal Basic Income, and other themes that connect Inverclyde with wider international conversations.

The station is still evolving, and these new elements are part of that process: testing, learning, refining, and gradually building a more coherent listening experience.

Welcome, Readers and Listeners

Whether you arrive through an article, a radio stream, a playlist, a community event, or a shared link — welcome.

Sonic Civil Alert is being developed as a space for independent music, practical knowledge, local voices, critical thinking, cooperation, and collective care. The written and audio sides of the project are now beginning to support one another more directly.

Thank you for reading, listening, sharing, and growing with us.

Partnerships

Sonic Civil Alert works with people and organisations who want to create practical, community-led media, culture and public-interest projects.

We are interested in partnerships with community groups, gardens, food networks, artists, educators, youth projects, cooperatives, social enterprises, campaigners, researchers, independent media makers, local venues and public-interest organisations.

We bring independent community media: audio production, radio broadcasting, digital storytelling, visual communication, research, facilitation and accessible publishing.

What we can do together

A partnership could involve:

• Co-producing a radio programme, podcast or audio series

• Documenting a local project, campaign or community story

• Hosting an event, discussion, listening session or broadcast

• Delivering a workshop in media, broadcasting, storytelling or digital skills

• Creating accessible media resources and public-information content

• Sharing equipment, facilities, knowledge or creative skills

• Deploying our portable or pop-up broadcast infrastructure for promotional or community event coverage.

• Connecting audiences, communities and movements across different places

• Supporting and promoting communication around food justice, housing, mental health, education, ecology, mutual aid, culture, fair work and pay, rights and community resilience

How we work

We look for a real shared purpose, clear public or community benefit, and enough independence for every partner to speak honestly and to act with care and compassion.

We value:

• Mutual respect and clear communication

• Community benefit over extractive promotion

• Honest representation instead of public-relations language

• Accessible participation and practical inclusion

• Fair credit and recognition for everyone involved

• Transparent expectations and realistic capacity

• Shared learning and accountable decision-making

• Each partner keeping its own identity, priorities and independence

We do not want token roles or partnerships where community voices are used simply to promote somebody else’s brand. We are most interested in work that is meaningful, useful and rooted in the people it is intended to serve.

Starting a collaboration

A good partnership starts with a conversation. We can discuss:

• What the project is for and who it should benefit and how

• What each partner can realistically contribute

• How decisions will be made

• What resources, time and funding are available

• How the work will be credited, shared and sustained

For larger, funded or longer-term projects, we prefer to agree roles, budgets, ownership, safeguarding, data use, credit and exit arrangements from the outset. This protects everyone involved and helps avoid misunderstandings. UK collaborative-working guidance similarly emphasises shared aims, clear responsibilities, proportionate agreements and respect for each organisation’s independence.

Sonic Civil Alert events bring people together to listen, learn, make, question, share skills, and build connections around the issues that shape everyday life.

Our programme may include live radio broadcasts, DJ sessions, listening events, talks, workshops, community conversations, screenings, creative sessions, pop-up media projects, training, skill-sharing, and collaborations with local groups. Some events will be rooted in Inverclyde and the west of Scotland; others will connect local experience with wider international movements for social, ecological, and economic justice.

We are interested in events that make room for participation rather than passive consumption. That can mean a workshop where people learn to record an interview, a community garden broadcast, a discussion about housing or food justice, a music-led fundraiser, a media-literacy session, or an informal space where people exchange knowledge and meet others doing useful work.

Not every event needs to be polished, large, or institutionally approved. Small gatherings, first attempts, difficult conversations, and experimental formats can matter just as much as formal programmes.

This page shares upcoming dates, invitations, calls for contributors, opportunities to take part, and documentation from events that have already happened.

If you are organising something relevant, or want to build an event with us, get in touch.

Artificial intelligence is already shaping how people work, learn, communicate, access services, and understand the world. It can support creativity, accessibility, research, translation, and routine tasks. But it can also reproduce bias, spread misinformation, extract labour and data, concentrate power, and make important decisions less transparent.

This project approaches AI neither as magic nor as something to reject automatically. It asks who designs these systems, whose data and labour make them possible, who benefits, and who carries the risks when they fail. It explores practical questions about accuracy, consent, copyright, surveillance, accessibility, environmental cost, misinformation, automated discrimination, and the right to challenge decisions made with algorithmic tools.

Ethical AI Use & AI Shortfalls focuses on informed, accountable practice. It documents ways that communities, educators, artists, workers, and public-interest groups can use AI transparently and critically — keeping human judgement, lived experience, consent, and collective responsibility at the centre. The aim is not blind adoption or blanket fear, but technology that genuinely serves people rather than extracting from them.

In a world shaped by insecure work, rising living costs, automation, illness, unpaid care, and unequal access to opportunity, Universal Basic Income asks a direct question: what would change if everyone had a guaranteed income floor, without punitive conditions or the constant threat of losing it?

This project explores UBI as a proposal for security, dignity, and greater freedom to make choices. It examines the evidence from basic-income and cash-transfer experiments, many of which have found improvements in wellbeing, financial security, and mental health. Employment outcomes, however, are often small, mixed, or difficult to interpret, while the broader effects of a full and permanent UBI cannot be settled by short, limited trials alone.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih+2

Rather than treating this uncertainty as an argument to stop thinking, Universal Basic Income asks what supporting structures would be needed for income security to reach its real potential: affordable housing, accessible healthcare, education, public transport, childcare, disability support, workers’ rights, and democratic control over essential services. Trials can show what happens when financial pressure eases for some people; wider social transformation requires the systems around them to become more supportive too. The Finnish experiment, for example, reported higher life satisfaction and less mental strain among recipients, while employment effects were modest.

The current economy is designed to take resources, make products, sell them, use them, and throw them away. A circular economy challenges that wasteful pattern by asking a simpler question: how can materials, skills, food, energy, and useful objects stay in circulation for longer?

This project explores practical alternatives to the throwaway model. It follows repair cafés, reuse networks, community workshops, tool libraries, food-rescue projects, refill schemes, recycling cooperatives, local makers, and initiatives that turn waste into something useful again. It pays attention not only to carbon, materials, and landfill, but also to the social value created when people repair, share, teach, and build together.

Circular Economy asks whether sustainability can be more than individual consumer choice. It explores how communities can make lower-waste living more affordable, accessible, and collective — while creating local skills, reducing dependence on extractive supply chains, and proving that care for people and care for the planet belong together.

When formal systems are slow, conditional, overwhelmed, or absent, people often organise for one another. Mutual aid is the practical work of meeting needs together: sharing food, transport, childcare, medicine, information, money, skills, and solidarity, without treating those receiving support as passive recipients.

This project looks beyond charity as a one-way transaction. It explores mutual aid as a relationship of shared responsibility — built on the understanding that anyone can need help, and everyone may have something meaningful to offer. From neighbourhood support groups and emergency relief networks to tenant organising, migrant solidarity, disability justice, and community kitchens, it follows people responding collectively to problems that institutions too often individualise.

Mutual Aid documents what works, what becomes difficult, and what communities learn while organising under pressure. It asks how acts of immediate care can also build longer-term confidence, connection, and power — especially when people refuse to accept abandonment, austerity, or division as inevitable.

Time is one of the most valuable things people have, yet conventional economics often treats it as worthless unless it can be sold for wages. Time banking starts from a different idea: that an hour of care, repair, translation, cooking, gardening, listening, mentoring, or practical help has value, regardless of a person’s job title, income, age, health, or formal qualifications.

This project explores time banks as practical experiments in reciprocity. It follows the networks where people exchange skills and support in hours rather than money, making it easier to ask for help without shame and to contribute without needing cash. It looks at what happens when neighbours recognise each other as holders of knowledge, capacity, and time — not simply as service users, consumers, or problems to be managed.

Across different countries and communities, Time Bank documents the promise, tensions, and everyday realities of building systems based on mutual recognition. It asks how shared time can reduce isolation, strengthen local resilience, and help create forms of value that do not depend entirely on the market.

In any country where people can wait months or years to access psychological therapies and specialist support, acknowledging how you feel is not a luxury—it’s a survival skill.

Local projects like The Anchor in Inverclyde and wider suicide‑prevention initiatives show how much it matters to have somewhere to turn when the system is overwhelmed: places that listen without judgement, help people feel safe, and make it possible to say “I’m not okay” without shame or fear.

This project recognizes the courage it takes to notice when life feels unbearable, to speak that truth out loud, and to seek support—whether that’s crisis lines, grassroots suicide‑prevention movements like Find Your Anchor, or informal networks of friends, peers and community groups. It treats “not being okay” as a human reality, not a personal failure, and explores how community tissue of care—listening spaces, peer groups, creative projects, and everyday check‑ins—can hold people while they navigate long waits, complex systems, and periods of feeling lost or weak.

Real change doesn’t begin with speeches or strategy documents—it begins when people show up, dig soil, share tools, and decide together that their street, estate, or town can be different.

Activism Through Action celebrates community gardens and volunteer networks as living proof that ordinary neighbours, giving time and care, can build resilience more powerful than any top‑down initiative.

This project follows gardens where growing food becomes growing power—places where unused land turns into shared plots, skill‑sharing hubs, and informal meeting spaces for mutual aid and solidarity.

It also maps the wider volunteer ecosystem: platforms, local centres, and grassroots groups connecting people to roles that match their abilities and energy, from gardening and conservation to mentoring, event organising, tech support, and behind‑the‑scenes admin that keeps projects alive.

In a place where industries shift, contracts shorten, and “good jobs” can feel out of reach, training and employment support in Inverclyde are quietly building new paths into decent work and lifelong skills. This project focuses on the programmes, employers, and community initiatives that treat people as more than statistics—offering fair chances to learn, retrain, and step into roles that actually fit their lives, not just the nearest vacancy.

It will share examples of what’s working on the ground: youth hubs linking training with paid placements, modern apprenticeship schemes that lead to real jobs, short targeted courses designed with employers, and local partnerships making sure nobody is left behind in the changing labour market. By documenting these good practices and the stories behind them, Training & Work: Paths to Real Opportunity aims to show how investment in skills and supportive employment can strengthen confidence, stability, and community resilience across Inverclyde—proving that fair work is built through collaboration, not luck.

Rights only protect us if we know they exist, understand what they mean, and feel confident enough to use them. When people don’t know the protections they’re entitled to, those rights become fragile promises on paper—easily ignored by institutions, employers, landlords, or authorities, and leaving communities more vulnerable to exploitation, discrimination, and unfair treatment.

This project treats “know your rights” as everyday self‑defence and collective empowerment: learning what the law and human rights standards actually say, recognising when those standards are being breached, and understanding the practical routes to challenge decisions that feel unreasonable, restrictive, or repressive. It explores how legal information, independent advocacy, and access to justice turn fear into confidence—helping people document abuses, ask better questions, make informed choices, and push back when their dignity or freedoms are at stake

Through clear guides, stories from rights struggles, and signposts to local support, Your Rights invites people to move from “I don’t think this is fair” to “I know this is wrong, and here’s how we can respond.”

The theatre of money is changing faster than most people can keep up with—contactless taps instead of cash, credit scores deciding life chances, algorithms trading in microseconds, and entire generations wondering if they’ll ever own a home or escape debt. Behind the branding and financial jargon, ordinary people are trying to navigate wages that lag behind costs, precarious work, rising rents, and the constant pressure to consume more just to feel “secure.”

This project treats financial literacy as a tool for dignity, not as a way to turn everyone into miniature capitalists. It explores how we can understand money without worshipping it: reading bills and bank statements, decoding credit reports, questioning debt, and learning the basics of savings, borrowing, and investment in ways that prioritize equality, equity, and collective wellbeing over individual extraction. It looks at the stories behind numbers—how finances shape mental health, family life, and community resilience—and how transparent, shared knowledge can turn shame and confusion into clarity and mutual support.

In a time when news, ads, memes, and propaganda all arrive on the same glowing rectangles, media literacy is no longer optional—it’s a survival skill for thinking clearly and acting responsibly. Media literacy means being able to access, analyse, evaluate, and create media with judgement, so we can tell who is speaking, why they’re speaking, and whether their message deserves our trust.

This project treats media literacy as everyday self‑defence and collective care: learning to spot bias and manipulation, understanding how algorithms shape what we see, and practising critical thinking so we don’t become passive repeaters of whatever scrolls past our eyes. It looks at how young people and adults can build these skills together—fact‑checking, comparing sources, and turning confusion into informed conversation that strengthens communities rather than dividing them.

Education in Inverclyde is more than classrooms and exam results—it’s the daily work of planting seeds for futures that can grow in many directions. From nurseries to colleges, special education services to community workshops, youth projects to adult learning, people across the Clyde are quietly building a landscape where everyone has chances to learn, adapt, and flourish at their own pace.

This project explores education as a lifelong, community-rooted practice: alternative learning spaces that meet young people where they are, special education settings that prioritize dignity and tailored support, and adult and community programmes that help residents retrain, reconnect, and discover new paths long after school ends.

It listens to educators, support workers, families, and learners themselves as they design environments where curiosity is protected, difference is respected, and learning is possible at every age.

Food is never just food in Inverclyde—it’s care, solidarity, and the quiet work of making sure no one is left behind. Across gardens, pantries, food banks, cafés, and community kitchens, neighbors are turning surplus into shared meals, anxiety into support, and hunger into a collective responsibility rather than an individual shame.

This project follows those living networks: the community gardens where people learn to grow and cook together, the pioneering pantries that replace stigma with choice, the emergency food hubs that hold the line when systems fail, and the weekly food shares that turn picking up groceries into checking in on each other. It listens to coordinators, volunteers, and residents as they build a local food ecosystem where dignity matters as much as calories.

Housing in Inverclyde is more than bricks, rent, and postcodes—it’s the foundation that shapes how people feel about their lives, their neighbors, and their future along the Clyde. In streets of tenements, high-rises, and hillside estates, residents are quietly rewriting what “home” means: from precarious, pieced‑together survival to spaces of stability, care, and community connection.

This project listens to those stories. It follows tenants fighting for fair treatment, families making the most of small flats, neighbors turning stairwells into social spaces, and cooperatives experimenting with new forms of ownership and support. It documents both the pressure—rising costs, ageing stock, empty promises—and the creativity that emerges when people refuse to accept that unsafe or insecure housing is just the way things are.

Through interviews, audio diaries, field recordings, and grounded reporting, Inverclyde Homes explores how better housing can grow from the bottom up: residents shaping regeneration plans, community groups supporting those at risk of homelessness, local projects reclaiming neglected spaces, and everyday acts of solidarity that make buildings feel like places to belong. Month by month, it gathers proof that decent, dignified homes are not a luxury, but the starting point for healthier lives, stronger communities, and a more hopeful future along the Clyde.

Young people are coming of age in a world that no longer follows the promises previous generations were taught to trust. Stable careers, affordable housing, social mobility, and ecological security are no longer given, so this project explores how youth are adapting in real time—learning new skills, building collective resilience, and imagining futures rooted in dignity rather than nostalgia.

Through essays, radio conversations, testimonies, and practical resources, Youth Futures documents the people creating new ways forward: alternative learning spaces, mutual aid networks, cooperative economic models, climate justice initiatives, and intergenerational exchanges grounded in honesty rather than blame. Each story asks the same urgent question: how do we build lives worth living when the old map no longer leads anywhere useful?

Inverclyde is more than shipyards and waterfront views—it’s a place where people are actively rebuilding what community really means in uncertain times. Across Greenock, Port Glasgow, and the surrounding areas, residents are creating networks of care, culture, and cooperation that quietly challenge isolation and disconnection and other disatvantages.

This project documents those efforts as they happen. Through field recordings, radio diaries, and grassroots storytelling, it captures the sounds, voices, and everyday practices shaping life along the Clyde—from pub conversations and coastal walks to community gardens, mutual aid networks, and creative spaces.

Each story is local, but the questions are wider: how do people build trust, share resources, and create belonging in a fractured and rapidly changing world? What does resilience actually look like on the ground? And what can other places learn from it?

Why this, why now?

Sonic Civil Alert (SO:CI:AL:) is being set up as a strictly non‑profit company limited by guarantee, so there is no private owner waiting to cash out and no shareholders to keep happy. Any surplus we make is recycled back into the station, into community projects, and into the off‑grid, portable infrastructure that keeps our broadcasts in community hands.

By manifesting an old plan – community‑based radio and investigative media – and combining it with a stubborn, portable sense of community wherever “home” might be, this project has finally come to life in this slightly twisted non‑profit ltd form.

We’re launching in a devastating, deliberately divisive era, where hot political topics and weaponised culture wars often turn people against each other, sometimes by design and sometimes through sheer exhaustion.

We don’t accept that this fractured state of our common life is final or irreversible.

With enough will, care and organised effort, the stories we tell and the structures we build can be re‑tuned toward a more liveable, loving future – one where people can disagree, resist and organise without being easily turned against each other.

Sonic Civil Alert is one small attempt to push in that direction: a station, newsletter and website‑like platform where community media, mental health recovery, critical analysis and everyday common sense can share the same signal.

Greenock has been home for the director for six years and has given him the time and space to stabilise, heal from the wounds of the past, and remember what he wanted to be – a community‑rooted DJ, organiser and builder of independent media.

What kind of community will this be?

This platform is not just a newsletter; it’s the written wing of a community radio project based in Greenock and open to the wider world. You’re not just subscribing to posts, you’re joining an ongoing conversation about how we live, organise and listen together across places, languages and scenes.

The space we’re trying to build here is patient, curious and non‑sectarian: a place where a Hungarian‑Scottish (“Hungarian Jock”) perspective can sit alongside other local and international voices without everyone having to see things in exactly the same way.

We care about everyday life and about giving room to breathe without overwhelming people or demanding instant agreement or cooperation.

Practically, that means:

• An editorial tone that assumes good faith and makes room for people to learn, unlearn and ask clumsy and inconvenient questions.

• A mix of local Greenock/Inverclyde stories and wider global threads, so nobody feels either parochial or detached from reality.

• Clear house rules: No personal attacks or dehumanising language, and no space for hate or harassment, while still welcoming genuinely different experiences, thoughtful disagreement and constructive debate. We have no time for time‑wasters; anyone who violates these basic principles can expect to be banned without warning.

The hope is that this becomes a home‑base for people who want to listen more deeply – to music, to each other and to the world – and, over time, to grow the kind of community that can support its own station, projects and shared spaces, wherever “home” happens to be.
